Hinchinbrook
Island and its surrounding environs have some of the most
spectacular scenery and protected waterways for "skipper-yourself"
motor yacht charters and sailing yacht charters along Queensland's
east
coast.
This large and fascinating island off the coast of Cardwell
is approximately 52 km long and 10 km wide. There are 11
beautiful sandy beaches, several of which will allow you
to enjoy motor yacht charters and sailing charters in absolute
seclusion on beaches which include North Shepherd, Macushla
and South Shepherd beaches. The national park covers an
area
of 37,379
hectares, making it the largest island on the Great Barrier
Reef, and when combined with the cruising waters of Rockingham
Bay, it is the perfect 'skipper yourself' location for either
motor yacht charters or sailing yacht charters. Read

More about Hinchinbrook Island
Hinchinbrook
is basically two large islands joined by a long sand isthmus
which has developed so there is a narrow sandy beach facing
south, then a few substantial dunes and a vast impenetrable
mangrove swamp cut by sinuous channels... From the air,
Hinchinbrook is one of the true wonders of the Australian
coastline, and one of the world's most outstanding island
parks.
Hinchinbrook Island is well worth visiting... and organising
a motor yacht charter or sailing yacht charter... it is
the largest island on the Great Barrier Reef and is ideal
for walkers and for people who enjoy the quietness of
virgin rainforests and pristine beaches. The channel which
lies between the island and the mainland is a flooded
river valley which is notable for its extensive areas
of mangroves.
The Queensland National
Parks and Wildlife Service, located near the jetty at
Cardwell, can give you advice on suggested two and five
day walks on the island... Campsites, toilets and boardwalks
have been placed strategically along the trails to make
the journeys easier... Hinchinbrook Island Wilderness Lodge,
located at Cape Richards on the northeastern corner
of the island, is the only accommodation on the island
and caters to a maximum of 45 guests who are accommodated
in 15 architect designed 'tree' houses, 18 rooms, and
3 cabins.
Access to Hinchinbrook Island
A launch from Cardwell to the island takes 40-45 minutes... Transfers which connect to the launch are available from Cairns and Townsville on Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays...
The Townsville - Cardwell transfer is 1.5 hours... The Cairns - Cardwell transfer is 2.5 hours.
