Located
just 8 km from Townsville... Magnetic island and its surrounding
waters are ideal cruising grounds for a bareboat sailing charter
and a great place to take a bareboat sailing holiday... with
approximately 40 km of coastline to explore and with 23 bays
or beaches you have a wide choice of excellent overnight anchorages.
Magnetic Island is the only island on the North Queensland
coast with a delightful blend of untouched national park, a
resident population of about 2,500 and a variety of holiday
resorts.
People taking a bareboat sailing charter have access on
the eastern side of the island to four small settlements
at Horseshoe Bay, (the island's major residential area) Arcadia,
Nellie Bay and Picnic Bay... It is this blend of deserted
anchorages and populated beaches that makes an interesting
mix for bareboat sailing holidays.
2533 ha of the central area and western side of the island
are national parkland. Although it is in the tropics, the
Townsville area, which includes the bareboat sailing waters
around Magnetic Island, is in a rain shadow which makes it
the sunniest region along the Queensland coast... Magnetic
Island averages over 320 days of sunshine per year... just
the sort of conditions that are just about perfect for bareboat
sailing holidays... It is just twenty minutes from Townsville
by fast "cat" across Cleveland Bay to what many
consider paradise! Read more

More than half of the island's 5,184 hectares is national
park, with Mt Cook in the centre rising 497 metres. Huge
granite boulders are softened by tall hoop pines, eucalypt
forests and small patches of rainforest... Where the rocky
headlands meet the sea, many secluded beaches have been formed.
A number may only be reached on foot or by boat. These locations
provide safe, quiet and secluded anchorages for charter boats
and are excellent cruising waters for bareboat sailing holidays.
There are 24 km of walking tracks through the park with
many spectacular lookouts. The national park is a haven for
wildlife like rock wallabies, possums, koalas and a wide
variety of bird life.
Access to the island is by regular ferry
service which leaves from Marineworld in Townsville. It's
from here that your bareboat sailing charter would depart.
There is also a barge which transports vehicles to the island.
