This section takes
you through the requirements of various scuba diving courses in
Australia.
You can follow through step-by-step what courses you need
to take from your first introductory dive all the way through
to Dive Instuctor.
Accreditations
The course information provided is largely structured around
PADI accreditation, because in Australia like most countries
in the south pacific PADI courses
are most common... however, there are limited number of dive operators
that offer NAUI, SSI courses and others.
All international dive associations are recognised in Australia...
if you have a certification card (c-card) with any one
of them you can dive anywhere...
see What
certification do I need in Australia.
Australian Medical Requirements
If you just want to dive!... provided you are certified
(at any level) you will not need to take a medical examination.
If you want to gain a scuba diving certification... and if
the course you want to take has a scuba diving component you will
be required to take a medical examination. To read more about
this refer to
Australian
Dive Medicals.
Taking a Learn to Dive course
is your first step in becoming a recreational scuba diver.
When you complete your scuba diving lessons you will obtain
your scuba diving certification and be given a life time license,
that may only require you taking the occassional refresher
course to allow you to enjoy a lifetime of recreational
scuba diving.
The course will teach you the basics of scuba diving, diving techniques and equipment.
For the first two days you will gain confidence completing pool dives and doing
classroom theory then finish with four open water ocean dives.
Companies will often run their own scuba diving programs in purpose built pools
and airconditioned classrooms (most appreciated in Queenslands summer) and pools
will often have 4 metre deep sections so you can get the "feel" for
diving while training.
What is offered in the various Learn to Dive courses will vary from company to
company - so you will see differences in course length, content and cost - and
this can depend on the teaching code the company teaches under ie. PADI, SSI,
NAUI... Study the course options, then match your budget and available time against
what is offered. |
