The Great Barrier Reef is a long way off the Keppel Island resort at this latitude but there's good scuba diving much closer to the resort on Putney Beach just down from the beach shed... Parker's Bommie, off the south-eastern tip of Great Keppel resort is believed to offer the best scuba diving around the island, so long as the weather is calm.

Heron Island resort, which is built in a national park, is famed for its superb scuba diving... and is a popular dive vacation destination as well as being a great scuba diving resort... Each October or November the week-long Heron Island Dive Festival includes a host of scuba diving seminars, lectures and other activities. (Accommodation can be tight during this time, so plan ahead...) Spear fishing is banned and the Great Barrier Reef here is fortunate to have escaped attacks by the crown-of-thorns starfish, which has caused so much damage further north.

The real advantage of the Lady Elliot resort for scuba divers is the superb scuba diving straight off the beach. This resort is an ideal choice to book dive vacation packages... The coral gardens area on the opposite side of the island from the resort offers wonderful scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef right along the western side of the island.
The island rises up from water 40m deep. The resort has good scuba diving facilities and you can take certificate courses, which start on the 1st of each month and last five days... They're diving crazy on this island so it's often possible to do more than two dives a day.
