Australia is a land of stunning images, rich and stark; of vibrant colours. Wide, vast and underpopulated, it offers itself for exploration and contemplation
To experience a get-away-from-it-all feeling you don't have to travel for days. Just an hour and a half out of Melbourne it is possible to pick up a secondary road drive for a further 3 hours and not see another vehicle, while less than 10 kilometres away is a major highway carrying 1000 vehicles a day... Under 2 hours from Brisbane is rainforest so dense it is almost necessary to use headlights.
On the other side of the continent lies the Kimberley region of red gorges and sand-topped mesas. From east to west across Australia you will find vast deserts and glistening winter snowscapes - all accessible off bitumen to the standard sedan as well as the four-wheel drive explorer.
Take time to read through both the shorter capital-city based tours and the longer treks described in our self drive travel itinerary section... It will be obvious when you look at the routes that you need not plan to travel all of Australia. The short tours are based on a major capital city and there are some that can easily be completed within 2-3 days.
If however you do have the time our itinerary guide can also take you right around our amazing land. It is possible to circumnavigate Australia today without leaving the bitumen, but that is not for everyone... and for those planning self drive itineraries around the Four Wheel Drive, remember that all of Australia is in someone's care... so plan on leaving it so your children's children can enjoy it too!! |
