HE LEGENDARY DESERT
TRAIN "the Ghan" was named after
the hardy Afghans and their camel trains |
which provided the only means
of transport into "The Centre" in the
early days. The journey is now a comfortable 20
hour world class train trip!... you will travel
1559 km's through some of Australia's most unique
country... a country rich in natural beauty, exquisite
desert sunsets and spectacular outback landscapes.

Boarding the Ghan in the afternoon you'll depart Alice Springs
through Heavitree Gap, a narrow pass in the
MacDonnell Ranges which accommodates the
railway line, the road and the Todd River.. this is a place
of geological wonder, where nature has sliced open the old
rock formations to reveal in cross section how the upthrusts
of rock formed the Ranges. The Gap was a place of power and
magic to Aborigines. Young tribesmen could go there only in
the company of an elder. Woman were not allowed there at all,
but were made to walk over the range... In the early days
the pioneer had little concern for the sacred sites of the
Aborigines, they saw only a handy pass through the range,
and they built there, first the road, then the railway.
Heading south through stark beautiful country, you'll experience
first hand the harsh and unforgiving landscape of central
Australia. Arriving at Tarcoola the Ghan
will share the track with the Indian - Pacific as it continues
to make its run south to Port Augusta following
the scenic Flinders Ranges to Port
Pirie, then through the South Australian "wheat
belt" to arrive in Adelaide at approx. 9.00 am. |
