Because of the distance, few from Sydney on
Australia's east coast have ever crossed the continent to Perth
in Western Australia despite its many attractions... And even by the standards of Australian travel, it's a
long 4,352 kilometres driving west through outback New South
Wales and South Australia and then traversing the empty treeless
plain that is the Nullarbor to reach the state capital, Perth...
The alternative has been to fly, but to cover the great distance
- almost as much as the distance between the east and west
coasts of the United States - isn't exactly cheap.
More about the Indian Pacific
Perth has long carried the Australia travel 'tag' as the
most isolated capital in Australia... The nearest capital
to it being Adelaide in South Australia, and that's 2750
kilometres away, at least two days by car... However, those
planning Australia travel are chalking in Perth as a place
to visit not wanting to restrict their Australia experience
to flying in and out of Sydney... Australia is such a big
country many international visitors now plan on having
arrival and departure points on opposite sides of the country.
While not necessarily cheaper, the transcontinental
Indian Pacific train offers one of Australia's great train
journeys and a less hectic way to enjoy mountain and desert
in a journey lasting 65 hours, with three nights on board
from Sydney to Perth or vice versa... For many, riding
the Indian Pacific train is itself an Australia travel
adventure. This transcontinental Indian Pacific train rail journey covers 4,352 kilometres...
There are scheduled stops at Broken Hill in outback New South
Wales, Adelaide in South Australia and the mining town of
Kalgoorlie in Western Australia... At these places, optional
off-train sightseeing tours are available to Indian Pacific
train passengers. There's also a brief stop at a place called Cook
(population:2) on the Nullabor Plain.
