s the name implies, the 'Indian Pacific'
spans a continent and touches two oceans on one of the
world's longest train journeys... As you |
cross this vast continent of Australia from west to east. From
the west you cross the treeless plains of the Nullarbor, to
the spectacular Blue Mountains on Australia's
east coast. During your journey you will see unique landscapes
unfold and spot a fascinating array of wildlife as you pass.
Recently celebrating its 30th anniversary, The Indian Pacific,
or 'IP' as it is affectionately known to train buffs, has traveled
more than 27 million kilometres and carried around 2.7 million
passengers... The journey from Perth to Sydney covers 4352 km
(2698 miles) and in either direction you'll have three nights
aboard this great train.
There are many things to see as you cross this vast continent.
And you can get up close and personal if you decide to take
the optional off-train sightseeing tour. These tours are offered
during scheduled stops at gold rich Kalgoorlie,
Adelaide and Broken Hill.
The remote outpost of Cook on the Nullarbor
Plain... population 2, presents a further opportunity to stretch
your legs... And keep your eyes peeled for a sighting of the
magnificent Australian wedge tailed eagle (the trains symbol)...
It wingspan which can be up to two metres, makes it easy to
spot in the clear desert sky.
