To make the planning process clear to you... two pre-planned
Whitsunday itineraries have been developed that you can use as a guide
to developing your own boating holiday.
The Whitsundays Summer Season - October to March
Winds NW to NE... blowing 10-15 knots
The Whitsundays Winter Season - April to September
Winds predominately E-SE to S... blowing 20 knots in the morning... 15
knots in the afternoon
It will also help your pre-planning and understanding of
the Whitsundays, if you purchase in advance your own cruising
guide the book, '100 Magic Miles of the Great Barrier
Reef' by David Colfelt, and a copy of the 'Official
Tide Tables' from Queensland Transport... you will
find these books on board your charter yacht, but having your
own copy will make a great trip reference as well as becoming
your 'bible' for any advance planning you may choose to do.

(April to September)

Background: Two couples
have booked a charter on a motor cruiser for 7 nights from
20 April to 27 April.
The Bareboat Charter Company is based at Shute Harbour, so the plan
is to start the holiday from Shute Harbour but return the
boat to Hamilton Island to allow them to catch a flight out
from the Hamilton Island Airport.
On previous boating holidays to the Whitsundays both couples
have spent time around the northern islands of Hook and Hayman,
and on this trip (because they only have seven nights) they
want to concentrate their trip and have a good look around
the southern portion of the Whitsundays, and the islands in
the Lindeman Group, in the centre of the bareboat area opposite
Cape Conway... Lindeman, Shaw and Thomas are the principal
Islands of the group.
Generally in the winter season you can expect seas to be
slight to moderate, winds E-SE to S at 15 to 20 knots. Winds
generally will continue through the night. 20 knots in the
morning, dropping to 15 knots in the afternoon. |
The Whitsundays Winter season itinerary
Night 1
Thursday, April 20 |
anchorage |
Cid Harbour,
map ref: C19 |
Tides:
| Time |
m |
| 0536 |
0.93 |
| 1143 |
2.94 |
| 1730 |
0.68 |
|
Considerations: A detailed look at the
tide times... and the times and direction of the tidal flow
from April 20 to April 27 around Whitsunday, Lindeman and
Shaw Island has decided everyone to plan their holiday so
they travel clockwise around these islands..
While tidal flow and wind direction is not as important
a consideration with a motor cruiser... Compared to a sailing
yacht, bucking a motor cruiser into a south-easterly tide
with a 20-25 knot wind in your face can still be pretty bracing.
The plan is to clear Shute Harbour by about 11.00 to 11.30am,
after their boat brief, and with the knowledge of forward
weather conditions, review their overall travel plans with
their area briefer. With high tide at approximately 11.40am,
and anticipated winds of about 10-15 knots it would be expected
to have a pleasant cruise to Cid Harbour for the first evening. |
Night 2
Friday, April 21 |
anchorage |
Tongue Bay
map ref: C27 |
Tides:

| 0615 |

| 1203 |
2.68 |
| 1755 |
0.82 |
|
Considerations: The plan is to leave
Cid Harbour late morning (about 10.30 to 11.00am) and travel
north up the west side of Whitsunday Island against the last
part of the flood tide.
This will take them past Hook Observatory and through Hook
Passage on the top of the tide. Once they round the top of
Whitsunday Island they'll be into the wind and an ebbing tide
for about 5.0 nautical miles before dropping anchor early
afternoon at Tongue Bay... A large anchorage well protected
from the SE to NW winds expected. Tongue Bay is well positioned
to let them explore Hill Inlet or laze about (away from the
crowd) on the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. |
Night 3
Saturday, April 22 |
anchorages
(three options) |
Windy Bay, map ref: C31
Stockyard Beach, map ref: C26
Whitehaven Beach, map ref: C31 |
Tides:

1.28 |
| 1233 |
2.43 |
| 1819 |
0.99 |
|
Considerations: Weather conditions at
the time will dictate their anchorage... If the winds are
right Chalkies (Stockyard) Beach is the preferred option,
as snorkeling is good at the northern end of the beach and
tides will still be low enough for a mid-morning snorkel before
leaving for Gap Beach on Lindeman Island where they plan on
spending their 4th night. |
Night 4
Sunday, April 23 |
anchorage |
Gap Beach

Tides:

| 1311 |
2.21 |
| 1852 |
1.18 |
Remember tides in this region are almost 50% bigger than Shute
Harbour, take this into account when anchoring. |
Considerations: Depending on wind conditions
a decision will be made about the best time to cross the open
passage between Whitsunday and Lindeman Islands.
The tide will be flooding south up to 1.11pm and after that
will turn and ebb north. But if, as expected at this time
of year the winds drop in the afternoon to 10-15 knots, it
should be a pleasant passage heading into a light wind and
sea after the tide turns just after 1.00pm.
Gap Beach has beautiful views towards Pentecost Island and
the main islands of the Whitsunday Group. |
Night 5
Monday, April 24 |
anchorage
(two options) |
Plantation Bay, map ref: S2
Neck Bay, map ref: S2 |
Tides:

| 1408 |
2.03 |
| 1945 |
1.37 |
Remember tides in this region are almost 50% bigger than Shute
Harbour, take this into account when anchoring. |
Considerations: The plan (and preference)
is to anchor at Plantation Bay, a lovely anchorage with a
delightful beach and excellent swimming... a change to Neck
Bay would only be made on a strong (up to 25 knots) SE wind
forecast .
If conditions are favourable it's planned to anchor at Plantation
Bay by 9.30 - 10.00am and take the tender into the Club Med
Resort for lunch... After anchoring at Plantation Bay, Club
Med will be contacted by radio to make reservations. If conditions
are not favourable (for the dingy trip) the other option is
take a day mooring from 11.00am - 3.00pm at the resort, then
move after lunch to the planned overnight anchorage at Plantation
Bay, which is only a short distance away. |
Night 6
Tuesday, April 25 |
anchorage |
Burning Point
map ref: S3 |
Tides:
| Time |

| 2109 |
1.52 |
Remember tides in this region are almost 50% bigger than Shute
Harbour, take this into account when anchoring. |
Considerations: This is a lovely anchorage
and well protected from a stiff SouthEasterly blow.
The northern shore of Burning Point has a broad sand beach
and sand flat so it's planned to get in a bit of sunbathing.
The well developed fringing reefs running the length of the
northern side of the island will provide some good snorkeling
and bottom fishing before leaving for Gulnare Inlet the next
day.
However if everyone likes the anchorage they might stay
a second night and leave early on the morning of Thursday
to arrive at Hamilton Island for their boat debriefing, and
in time to make their flight out at 11.45am. |
Night 7
Wednesday, April 26 |
anchorage (optional) |
Gulnare Inlet
map ref: C20 |
Tides:
| Time |
m |
| 0425 |
2.79 |
| 1154 |
1.31 |
| 1740 |
2.11 |
| 2247 |
1.50 |
|
Considerations: If the decision is made
to leave the Burning Point anchorage for Gulnare Inlet on
Wednesday... It's planned to leave when wind and tide are
in the same direction with the tide dropping and ebbing north
about 9.30 - 10.00am. Taking the passage to the north-east
side of Henning Island its planned to anchor, have lunch,
(and if the southerly is light) get in a last snorkel on the
coral reef that extends west from the northern tip of Henning.
Around 2.30 - 3.00pm its planned to enter Gulnare on the
rising tide (being careful to use a back bearing on Dent and
Pine Islands to find the entrance). After anchoring its intended
to explore up Gulnare by dingy, and find the old logging tramway
that runs off the right side of the inlet. |
Night 8
Thursday, April 27 |
back
home from Hamilton Island |
| |
Leave Gulnare early at about 6.00 and no later
than 6.30am (before the 8.00am radio skeds), while the tide
is still high (high tide at 5.42am) and make passage for Hamilton
Island Marina... After clearing Gulnare, it's planned to re-anchor
and have breakfast.
Pre-arrangements for a Hamilton Marina berth will have been
made, and when in line of sight will call the Harbour Master
on VHF 16/68 to confirm the berth.
After the boat debriefing, catch the late morning flight
to Sydney. |
