Scuba diving... discover the world beneath the waves
| |
| |
It is difficult for the non-diver
to perceive the underwater world. It seem mysterious and somewhat
hostile. As you gain scuba diving experience, however, the mystery
is reduced, the hostility fades and is replace with curiosity,
awe, and respect. It is difficult to imagine remaining submerged
for prolonged periods in an alien environment where pressure
presses in on every side, yet we live submerged... submerged
in a sea of air, and the effects of going under water are only
changed by the greater weight of the liquid. When we can cope
with this increased weight, which is pressure, and can take
an air supply with us, we can adapt very well to submerging
ourselves in water also.
With proper scuba diving equipment, knowledge, and skills you can enter the
water in complete safety and no discomfort. You can explore
there with mask, snorkel, and fins while holding your breath
as a skin diver (also called a `Free Diver'), or you can prolong
your visit with the use of scuba (Self-Contained Underwater
Breathing Apparatus) equipment.
The prerequisites for participation in a scuba diving lessons are easily
met by most individuals. You should be reasonably healthy and
have a good circulation and respiration. Physically, you should
be a reasonably proficient swimmer and be comfortable and relaxed
in the water. Mentally, you should have a mature attitude, good
judgement, and self-discipline.
There are many things to do as a scuba diver, and learning how to
do them the correct way through proper scuba diving training makes them easier
and more enjoyable.
The Whitsundays is second only to Cairns as the largest scuba diving
training centre in Australia. Like Cairns, you can dive virtually
365 days a year and you have a choice of scuba diving resorts or you can choose from a wide variety of scuba diving trips and packages.
You can mix diving with other holiday pleasures - and for the
Bareboat charterer consider hiring a dive instructor for a half
day to introduce you to the sport and prepare you for a shallow
(9 metre) dive. This is a good way to decide whether to go ahead
with a certificate course, and also gives you the opportunity
to sample the Reef with only a investment in money and time.
As an alternative to diving on a bareboat yacht charter, consider making
arrangements to join-up with a Dive boat on a scheduled day
dive trip - and meet them at one of their nominated dive sites...
these scheduled trips provide the equipment, gear and generally
two dives... an ideal way to combine some top scuba diving with your
bareboat or skippered yacht charter. |
