Special groups
    Students
Australian students travelling within Australia and overseas students visiting Australia for a holiday or to study should find out what insurance cover, if any, their school, university or study abroad program provides. Often any health cover will only cover students for the academic year and not for any vacation breaks and student domestic health cover rarely covers travel abroad. Many insurance companies provide low cost plans for students aged 26 and under so it is worthwhile to ask about student rates. Students may also get substantial discounts for groups travelling together. International student ID cards may feature travel assistance services, but are unlikely to offer cover for medical expenses and other events such as delays, loss of luggage etc.

Group Travel
Groups of at least 5 travellers (many companies may need 10 or more) travelling on the same itinerary may be able to apply for a group travel insurance policy on the one application. Most group travel insurance plans are not age related so the plan is the same price for all ages. These plans can provide substantial savings, particularly for very large groups and for students and seniors.

Backpackers
Backpackers and independent/long term travellers have different needs from the average family on a 2 or 3 week vacation. They may be travelling for months or years at a time, to remote places and taking part in adventure activities. These types of travellers need an insurance plan that covers these needs and provides easy access to information, claims lodgement and the ability to extend cover whilst travelling if required. There are several insurance companies providing low cost, long term cover for the independent traveller with facilities to extend cover indefinitely and access information via the internet. Some of these plans allow travellers to purchase insurance no matter where in the world they are at the time and travel doesn’t need to begin and end in their home country.

Families
Families usually have a set time period and return date for travel, so they need to check for the level of cover for unforseen delays as well as adequate levels of cover for medical expenses, repatriation and personal belongings. Ensure that cover is appropriate for all members of the family and the activities that may be undertaken during the trip.

Multi-Trip Cover
Frequent travellers can purchase plans which cover them for multiple trips over a certain time period, usually 12 months. For frequent travellers this can be a simpler and more cost effective way to cover themselves than taking out a separate policy for each trip.

Snow Holidays
Special insurance policies can be purchased for skiing holidays, covering such things as personal ski equipment, hire expenses, cancellations, lift passes and even for lack of snow.
