The Airlie
Beach locals have
complemented the existing small beach with Airlie Lagoon,
which has its own beaches, its own shade areas,
its own lifeguards, its own free barbeque facilities
and it’s own seafront appeal for everyone from babes
in arms to seasoned travellers… The safe, filtered
water is stinger free year round. It’s no surprise
that, as Airlie Beach has become the favoured choice for
Whitsunday island and mainland getaways, the Airlie Lagoon
has become the areas favoured outdoor meeting spot.
The Airlie Beach Bicentennial Walkway is ideal for a waterfront
wander from the Whitsunday Sailing Club right round Airlie
Beach
to Cannonvale’s esplanade… It includes a stroll
through two parks, the Airlie Lagoon parkland, past Coral
Sea Resort and Abel Point Marina and around Whisper Bay… Photo
opportunities abound, so take the camera.
The magic of Airlie Beach comes with it’s laid back
tropical lifestyle, all served up on a platter of magnificent
natural wonders, all within easy reach… The lifestyle
easily seduces, to the extent that locals just smile when
they hear of yet another visitor who has gone home, packed
up and moved back to the Whitsundays just as fast as they
could!...
Airlie
Beach... is the gateway to this complex of islands,
villages and resort towns referred to as the Whitsundays… Airlie
Beach is located between Cannonvale and Shute Harbour,
ideally situated at the bottom of the Conway Ranges beside
a beautiful tropical beach… Airlie Beach is 1135km
north of Brisbane and 26km east of Proserpine.
This colourful cosmopolitan and inviting holiday town of
Airlie Beach is located on the shores of a palm fringed
beach and overlooks the calm waters of Pioneer
Bay dotted with yachts. Airlie Beach is part of a picturesque peninsula that
reaches out to the Whitsunday Passage and provides the ideal mainland base
for holiday fun and adventure in the Whitsundays.
As you drive into Airlie Beach through the neighbouring
community of Cannonvale the road climbs above Abel Point
Marina, providing expansive views of the indented coastline,
the aquamarine sea and the shapes of distant Hayman and Hook
islands on the horizon. You can't avoid the holiday feeling
that scene evokes, nor the relaxed tropical ambience as you
wander around the village streets and down to the vast lagoon… set
in landscaped parkland overlooking the bay… the Airlie
Beach Lagoon provides stinger free swimming with lifeguard
attendants and a children's pool.
Many people choose to stay at Airlie Beach and take day trips
to the surrounding islands, most of which are within comfortable
cruising distance… Airlie
Beach offers visitors a broad array of accommodation from stylish resort hotels
on the water's edge and apartments on the hillside overlooking the panorama
of beach, bay and islands, to bed and breakfast options, motels, camping and
caravan parks as well as a host of backpacker accommodation… Airlie Beach
provides many of the essential services for travellers in the region and the
town's shopping areas are open seven days a week. Every Saturday the foreshore
parkland turns into a bustling market with stalls selling fresh fruit and veggies,
local arts and crafts and all manner of goods under the shade of coconut palms. |

Airlie Beach is a yachties paradise and boating
is the essence of its survival. The Whitsundays attracts
sailors from all over Australia and the world, and it is
not hard to understand why. Not only is the area physically
beautiful, it is sheltered from the ocean swell by the reef,
while the islands stop the winds from becoming too strong.
There are big tides, to be sure, and sometimes the winds
and currents can be a bit tricky, but usually conditions
are perfect.
In recent years, skipper yourself ‘bareboat’ chartering
has become extremely popular. This means that you rent a
boat on its own, without skipper or crew. You will be given
a half day briefing and then a trial sail for half a day
to demonstrate that you are reasonably competent with a boat… Once
that is accomplished you can take off on your own to wander
where you will in what are still almost deserted waters.
Given the number that flock to the Whitsundays, it is amazing
that one never seems to see more than a couple of boats at
a time, and often none at all.
There are a wide range of one day trips to the reef and
the world famous island resorts – such as Hamilton,
Daydream and Hook – with some cruises taking in more
than one resort during the day… Hook Island Resort,
situated in a sandy cove overlooking mountainous Whitsunday
Island, is particularly geared to the budget traveller.
Many
cruises stop at Whitehaven Beach, a spectacular 5km stretch
of pure white sand and crystal blue water. Some cruises are
aimed at certified divers while a number of dive operators
offer diving courses ranging from beginner to advanced… While
cruising during July to September, you might spot a humpback
whale as these gentle giants migrate to the Whitsundays from
Antarctica to breed… There are special cruises dedicated
to whale watching during these months.
The mainland's dining and
entertainment options centre around Airlie Beach, ranging
from silver service resort
dining to al fresco cafes and cheap eats, while Airlie's
clubs and bars provide plenty of entertainment well into
the night… The nearest mainland airport to Airlie
Beach is the Whitsunday Coast Airport at Proserpine, about
20km (12 miles) inland.
|
| |
|
|
|
|
| |
Proserpine is basically a cane
farming town but its jet airport has made it a gateway to
the area. It has diminished in significance since an airport
was built on Hamilton Island but there has been talk that
it might be upgraded to cater for international jets.
The jumping off point for the
Whitsunday Islands is Shute Harbour... located 8 kms east
from Airlie Beach… Shute
Harbour is reached by a short winding journey through Conway
National Park. Shute Harbour is the embarkation point for
ferries to the island resorts and charter operations… This
large sheltered inlet, sprinkled with boats and flanked
by steep, wooded banks, is a hive of marine activity. So
much so that it ranks as the second busiest commuter port
in Australia after Sydney's Circular Quay. Shute Harbour has a picturesque setting and while there
is some accommodation available, the harbour and the surrounding
infrastructure is geared mostly to the task of transporting
visitors. Security parking facilities are available for
those setting sail… Take the drive to the top of
Coral Point - the headland behind the harbour - for some
stunning views of the harbour and the islands and channels
of the Whitsunday Passage.
